What is the best beach in Southern California for my family?

I was hoping we could perhaps stay in like a condo on the beach. Somewhere just outside of LA, so we could travel back and forth easily. A beach that is beautiful, clean, with people (but definitely not overcrowded). Maybe somewhere with shops, restaurants around. Volleyball net? Surfing would also be cool to watch or even try. Oh and were a family of 5, (kids are 18,17,13)
