What are the bubbling holes on the beach?

4
I just got back from the beach (Wild Dunes, SC), and along the ocean there were small bubbling holes everywhere. I took my shovel and tried to dig to find out what they were from, but I didn’t find anything. I thought that I might find a crab, or plant or something but I didn’t find anything. Anyone know what the holes are made from?

Sand crabs. You have to dig deeper. They are quick.

I’ve seen ‘em too and I think they are air trapped in the sands that results probably from tidal action. Some hole are definitely from clams too but I think they are bigger and they ****** when you get close to them.

air vents from zillions of tiny “sand crabs”; little crusteaceans. You didn’t dig deeply enough.
