Beach?

If you try to wade, will you just fall into the ocean, or does the sane slope down? (If it’s different for different beaches, I’m asking about Newport Beach.)

Also, is it dangerous to swim in the ocean if you don’t know how to swim? Like, to swim and boogie board?

If you don’t know how to swim, stay out of the water. above your shins. You never know when a large wave can pull you out. I’d really **** for you to drown. But it’s just common sense.

Most areas of Newport slope rather gently. But because the Pacific Ocean has large waves, some areas can have drop-offs, trenches, and an uneven bottom. Best to play it safe.

Let’s talk about the difference between ‘wading’ and ’swimming’ just to get us on the same page.

Wading is ‘to walk in water, partially immersed’, in other words you can stand up. Now ordinarily this is a ‘no brainer’ for most people in most bodies of water EXCEPT the ocean. The problem with wading in the ocean to a depth past your waist is that the bottom may suddenly drop off several feet due to inter-tidal currents, and depending on when you go in the water (high tide vs low tide…or somewhere in between) this dropoff might be in different places respective to the shoreline. You might have been to the beach and seen a steep drop in the sand some yards away from the waterline…this is essentially the same thing that can happen in the water beyond the mean-tide line. This is not a problem if you can swim even a little bit, but it will startle you when you step off, and that might make you panic a bit and make it harder to stay afloat.

Newport beach is no different than most other sandy shore beaches in southern CA. it has shore crashing waves and intertidal activity that can (not always) erode the sand.

My advice to you is that if you cannot swim at all, that you stay out of the water that is deeper than your hips. I have been surfing over 20 years, and it is a false sense of security that a boogie board will give you in deep water (over your head). Go into the water to about waist deep with your board and ride the whitewater in to shore and have a good time.

Don’t venture out too far. Play it safe, fun on the beach is not worth drowning for.

have fun. Newport Beach is a great place.

If you don’t know how to swim, DO NOT GO BOOGIE BOARDING. You will be fine to go in to maybe your knees, but there are occassional waves that are big and can knock you down. It is better be safe than sorry. As for Newport Beach, I go there about every weekend. The sand slopes gently so you can walk in about as far as you feel comfortable.
