How do I get to Omaha Beach and the American Memorial Cemetery from Bayeux? Is there a bus?

2
I’m visiting Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery next week. But there are lots of sites that tell me I can either pick up a taxi or a tour bus at Bayeux. Is there a non-tour bus I can take? What’s the best way to get there without planning a tour?

There is a bus service to the area from Bayeux (Bus Verts – Ligne 70). Unfortunately the service is very irregular and tailored to the needs of the local communities (Schoolchildren, shoppers, etc), it has never been intended for tourists. The service operates twice a day, bringing the aforementioned into Bayeux from the outlying areas for school, work, shopping etc. So it is possible to get from Omaha Beach area to Bayeux for the day but NOT in the opposite direction.

If you are staying at a reputable hotel in Bayeux, the receptionist will have all the information you require to partake in a tour. The operators usually take small parties from the hotels around Omaha Beach on a half-day tour that includes the Cemetery and the Landing Beaches in a minibus (16 passengers) as the roads are very narrow. Also you have the advantage of a registered driver/guide who knows ALL the history of the area and will present that information in French & English. The cost of the tour usually includes your transport, admission fees to various locations, the services of the driver/guide, collection and return to your hotel.

Quite honestly you could NOT organize the same tour yourself without incurring costs way above the tour price..

As the previous poster mentioned, there are buses that run out there, but it is not the easiest way to get around. I opted to join a tour and found it to be very valuable. The tour guides have a wealth of knowledge and stories to share that you wouldn’t get from a self-guided outing. The company I went with (Battlebus) had several tour options, half day or full day.

I don’t work for them or anything, just had a good experience last year and found it to be well worth the money spent.

That being said, the previous post outlines the best way to take public transit out there, which is doable… just wanted to put in my two cents!

Bon voyage!
